BROADLEAF LAVENDER
Broadleaf lavender has larger leaves and powerful inflorescences with a bright, camphor-like aroma. It blooms a little later than narrow-leaved lavender, usually in July, and pleases with its long flowering period. This species is valued for its decorative qualities and strong aroma, which is especially noticeable in warm weather.
Features:
Plant height: 50−80 cmFlowers: bluish-purple, looser than narrow-leaved lavenderFlowering: July-SeptemberAroma: rich, fresh, with camphor notesLoves the sun, does not tolerate stagnant moistureLeaves are lanceolate, oblong, grey-green or blue-green in colourWinter hardiness: average (down to -18°C, requires shelter for the winter)
Uses:
✔Essential oil production
✔ Bouquets and dried flowers
✔ Home fragrance
✔ Garden decoration and cut flowers
✔ For decorating terraces, balconies, flower beds, fragrant corners and landscape compositions. Looks great in decorative planters.
Broadleaf lavender blends harmoniously with:
roses; sage, rosemary, hyssop; geraniums, daylilies, carnations; cereals and low ornamental shrubs.
Best planting time: spring or autumn
Planting location: sunny, with good air circulation.
Soil: light, well-drained (does not like waterlogging), with a neutral or slightly alkaline reaction (pH 6.5−7.5).
Distance between plants: 40−60 cm
Watering: moderate, only after the soil has dried out
Winter protection: must be covered with spruce branches or spunbond in November.
Pruning: in early spring to shape the bush and after flowering to stimulate a new wave of flowering during the season.
Less frost-resistant than narrow-leaved lavender. In open ground, it requires shelter or transplanting into a container for wintering in a cool, bright room (5−10°C).
Recommendations:
In autumn, carefully prune the inflorescences without touching the old shoots;
Cover the plant with a layer of mulch and spruce branches, construct an airy dry shelter from non-woven material, such as agrofibre or spunbond.
During harsh winters, it is advisable to transplant lavender into a container and bring it indoors.
